Description

So this is my first project for my metals 3 class.

We had to cast an object into metal and create a form around it. So I decided since I did a little casting this summer I would play and see if I could make something out of wax like I have in clay and cast that. I came up with the idea of a Nautilus interacting with some coral. I discovered after I came up with the idea that I HAPPENED to have this fossil that had a predrilled hole in it for a necklace. I also had the piece of coral.

This is a shadowbox effect, it is all in layers. ( I will try to take better pictures to show that when I get it back) the blue is copper (again ^^ love that stuff) sand is brass, The head is cast out of sterling silver (leftover pieces from the summer class melted down for cast ^^) with a sterling wire soldered on and the outside and back is all sterling silver plate.

So the Head is attached with a wire that was flattened on one end then soldered on. It has been dipped in liver of sulphur to give it that dark look. Then the wire wraps around fossil and becomes a tentacle. The fossil has a custom prong set piece that uses the predrilled holes to hold the fossil. That piece is riveted onto the face of the circle. Also riveted to the face is the roller printed brass plate piece that the texture is to represent sand. Behind that is the coral with custom made rivet/prong/risers that holds it at an angle as well as holds the coral with two separate claw like pieces that turn into rivets on the back. Behind the coral are two copper plates that are riveted. One to the back and one with a gap to raise it but also riveted. Their shape is to symbolize waves/currents/water and have my favorite patina. Copper covered in salt & water, leaving the salt chunks so that as it hangs overnight with fumed ammonia it will turn blue where the salt touches.

It has a dual pin pinback. I will also get pictures of that once it has been graded and returned ^^

Over all I am very proud of how with turned out and couldn't wait to show it off to all of you ^-^
